Epistechnology is neither speculative metaphysics nor an uncritical sociology of technology. It is a material, historical, and critical inquiry into how instruments, technical objects, and computational architectures establish the conditions of possibility for scientific knowledge and vital agency.
To avoid both scholastic abstraction and ideological co-optation, the research program operates through strict heuristic rules, a dialectical counterfactual method, and deliberate epistemic demarcations.
1. The Methodological Triad
Every inquiry within Epistechnology is tested across three complementary axes:
A. The Historical A Priori (Bachelard, Foucault, Rheinberger)
Transcendental conditions of knowledge are not immutable categories fixed in human nature; they are historical a priori scaffolds materialized in experimental apparatuses (phénoménotechnique). - We do not ask how the human mind speculates about nature in the abstract. We investigate how clocks, telescopes, cloud chambers, interferometers, and neural networks construct novel observational regimes. - Scientific concepts (such as entropy, feedback, information, and statistical significance) do not descend from pure reason; they emerge from specific technical-material setups before being generalized into universal explanatory categories.
B. The Heuristic of Breakdown (Simondon, Canguilhem)
A technical object or system rarely reveals its underlying normative commitments when functioning smoothly. In seamless execution, the machine appears as a naturalized, transparent medium. - The fundamental epistemic probe of Epistechnology is the breakdown (la panne): operational crisis, friction, interface resistance, and error. - Following Georges Canguilhem, error is the generative site of vital normativity. Following Gilbert Simondon, technical objects evolve from abstract configurations toward integrated ensembles (concretization) precisely by resolving internal physical-operational conflicts. Breakdown is where the concealed architectural compromises of human design are forced into the open.
C. The Immanent Critique of Objectivity (Desrosières, Daston & Galison, Agazzi)
Every act of measurement or quantification requires an antecedent convention: quantifier, c'est convenir puis mesurer (Alain Desrosières). - There is no raw, unmediated empirical data. To produce an "objective" measurement or algorithmic prediction, an apparatus must perform a normative cut: selecting specific variables, establishing equivalence classes, and discarding unquantifiable dimensions of reality as "noise." - Epistechnological critique does not deny scientific rigor; rather, following Evandro Agazzi, it insists that objectivity is valid strictly within its explicitly operationalized predicates. The ethical and methodological imperative is to trace what has been excluded, simplified, or subordinated to produce the effect of "neutrality."
2. Dialectical Method: The Counterfactual Stress-Test
Conceptual claims within this program are not formulated by dogmatic assertion. They must withstand a rigorous counterfactual protocol:
- Steelmanning the Counter-Thesis: Every epistemological claim is confronted with the most coherent, sophisticated version of the opposing argument (e.g., confronting vital extension with Jacques Ellul's thesis of total systemic determinism, or confronting semantic embodiment with Alan Turing's formal computationalism).
- Exposing Antinomic Illusions: Following the Kantian critical method, when technical categories are dogmatically projected beyond their operational domain (e.g., treating syntactic predictability as noetic comprehension), a dialectical antinomy arises.
- Resolution through Material Grounding: An antinomy is never resolved through romantic retreat or utopian synthesis. It is resolved by tracing the operational limits of the formal system and reconnecting it to the living organism and its material interfaces.
3. Notes of Caution & Epistemic Demarcations
To prevent common misunderstandings, Epistechnology defines itself through explicit negative boundaries:
I. Neither Technophobia nor Technolatry
Following Gilbert Simondon's core directive, this research firmly rejects the false alternative between romantic technophobia (nostalgia for an unmediated, pristine nature) and technolatry (uncritical techno-solutionism, accelerationism, or transhumanist dogmatism). Technical objects possess profound philosophical dignity and culture; respecting them requires treating them as historical, material artifacts subject to criticism, rather than as demonic threats or sacred idols.
II. Against Disembodied Computationalism
We reject the computationalist presumption that formal syntax, statistical transformers, or calculating algorithms are ontologically self-grounding. Following the later Ludwig Wittgenstein, no rule contains within itself the instructions for its own application without infinite regress. Pure logic and automated inference remain semantically blind and normatively inert outside an embodied, shared form of life (Lebensform). Computation is an archive of grammatized memory traces; meaning, truth, and intentionality belong solely to living practice.
III. Rejection of Downstream "Ethics as Compliance"
Epistechnology does not produce ethical checklists, corporate AI alignment guidelines, or regulatory "trustworthy tech" whitewashing. Treating technology as a value-neutral black box while relegating ethics to downstream oversight boards is a recipe for moral abdication. Authentic techno-scientific ethics arises within the design of the apparatus itself, as a critical interrogation of the conventions, metric incentives, and power asymmetries incorporated into its definition of "objectivity."
IV. Intelligence Augmentation (IA) over Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The program adheres to Douglas Engelbart's and J.C.R. Licklider's foundational bifurcation: - Artificial Intelligence (AI): The alienating ambition to substitute the human agent, automating judgment and displacing accountability into an ungrounded technical system. - Intelligence Augmentation (IA): The vital, emancipatory development of open-ended cognitive and material prostheses that expand the organism's exploratory capacities, reflective autonomy, and ability to institute new social and scientific norms.
V. Research as an Open Compendium
The essays published on this site represent consolidated milestones, but the underlying compendium (maintained in the project's permanent Git Wiki) is an active, evolving research notebook. Anomalies, historical gaps, and counterfactual tensions are explicitly tracked rather than smoothed over for rhetorical convenience.
